Maureen Sotoohi

Maureen Devine Sotoohi joined the language arts department at APU in 2009. Before joining APU, Maureen worked in Japan as an English teacher in Sendai, north of Tokyo. As a teacher at the New Day School and then as the International Community Center Coordinator for Tesco Educational Systems, Maureen taught English to students of all ages and all ability levels. After more than three years in Japan, Maureen returned to the United States where she tutored English at Northern Essex Community College in Massachusetts before entering the field of educational publishing. As a writer, editor and product manager at Curriculum Associates, Inc., she was able to integrate her education, teaching experience and writing skills into the production of high-quality teaching materials, including Passwords, a series of books for English language learners focusing on science and social studies vocabulary, and Perspectives, a multicultural social studies series.

Maureen received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. As part of her undergraduate studies, she spent a year studying at the University of East Anglia in Great Britain. Maureen also is a member of the International Reading Association (IRA) and Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
