He used to run training sessions to help Vietnamese teachers modernize their English instruction.

Interests
Brian believes having diverse hobbies is important to be a well-rounded person. He enjoys martial arts, both authentic and fantastic. He has studied Western boxing, Japanese karate, and a traditional Chinese kung fu system and he's also a fan of over-the-top fantasy martial arts action like the novels of Jin Yong (Kim Dung) and the films of Tsui Hark. He enjoys the fusions and cross-pollinations that occur between cultures. As a film buff, he enjoys tracing the influences among samurai movies, westerns, and science-fiction films. As a fan of Bobby Chin's Asian fusion cuisine, he also likes to create new dishes that combine Vietnamese and Western flavors (such as combining Tex-Mex black bean burritos and Vietnamese spring rolls). As a native of icy northern Michigan in the US, he is also a big fan of his hometown's traditional pastimes: ice skating, hockey, swimming, and fishing. He is also enthusiastic about many types of music and enjoys playing guitar (especially the blues).
