English Language Development Program

APU International School uses the English Language Development (ELD) curriculum specifically designed for students wishing to achieve English proficiency at the secondary level as defined by American educational standards. Students planning to attend college or university in the US, Canada, or other English-speaking countries will find that English proficiency is essential for academic success.

The intensive pace of the ELD program at APU International School ensures that students are able to learn English much more rapidly and thoroughly than they would in the typical evening ELD program offered twice per week at a language center.

Our innovative and intensive ELD curriculum utilizes the integrated-skills approach to teaching and learning. The program consists of nine levels of instruction: an introductory level for students without prior ELD experience followed by eight levels of instruction, each focused around progressively more challenging degrees of English proficiency.

In each session, students receive in-class instruction five days each week for nine weeks, with two such ELD sessions per high school semester. This structure even allows students without any prior ELD training to complete the entire program in just nine sessions, or one calendar year, while students with some degree of English proficiency may complete the program in fewer sessions.

English Language Development Courses

Each ELD level consists of multiple courses, each intended to advance students to the same degree of English proficiency through assorted teaching methods.

Our core ELD courses, Speaking and Listening (S&L) and Reading and Writing (R&W), make use of intellectually challenging, contemporary topics to stimulate critical thinking skills while also building language proficiency. In each ELD session, these core courses explore different aspects of the same themes, and students practice language skills through high-interest and contextually-linked content, or content-based leaning.

To implement our unique program successfully, our all-foreign faculty is fully qualified, trained and experienced in the delivery of our curriculum. In addition, our caring and supportive teachers work closely with students and approach their work and responsibilities with the attitude and spirit of helping and guiding students achieve their goal of academic success in colleges or universities overseas.
