Elementary Field Trip to Big C Phu Thanh

28 elementary students studied applied science, math, and economics at Big C Phu Thanh on Friday morning the 17th. After being greeted at the front door by Big C’s friendly bear, who delighted most of the children, the students and teachers were led by the manager through the store to the bakery, where, with chefs hats and aprons on, they learned details of the bread and cake-producing process and got to try their hands at making their own loaf of baguette.

As the bread baked, the teachers of each grade taught their students a mini-lesson in home economics, nutrition, and math. Students experienced intense temptation as they passed by rows and rows of packaged foods. Students enjoyed the chance to compare clearly-marked prices and know the different value of a variety of fruits and vegetables.

After the lessons, students received the bread they had baked and found it delicious.

“Best day ever! It was amazing!” commented Tyler in grade 2. Pressed to choose whether the highlight was making the bread or eating it, Tyler could not decide.

Mandy and Cindy, also grade 2, shared Tyler’s enthusiasm for making bread. Mandy found eating the bread her favorite part, “because it was yummy!” Both girls agreed that they learned a lot about how to shop effectively and compare prices.

“I learned something by going around the store, [but] I’m not sure what,” was the comment of John, grade 4, who, like all the students, enjoyed the hands-on experience of making bread.

Cathy, grade 5, noted that shoppers and staff “are really busy and working hard” when they shop or work at Big C.

Cathy’s classmate Bethany noted that the cashiers were especially busy taking care of customers. She appreciated the introduction to how to choose ingredients like flour, and “vegetables for vegetarians.”
