Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the usual class size?

We keep our class sizes small so as to allow greater teacher attention per student. Students are able to learn within small classes in a nurturing environment. Teachers are also able to spend a meaningful amount of one-on-one time with each student.

Class room sizes are on average 12 students per classroom, but never reach above 20 students per classroom for the middle and high school. Elementary school classes are on average 10 students per classroom. Class numbers are carefully monitored so that appropriate student teacher ratios are maintained.

2. Who are the teachers?

APU has an experienced and qualified staff committed to providing quality and varied learning opportunities for your child. Our staff brings a wide range of proven international experience to our school. You can find out more about each individual teacher here.

3. How is the academic year structured?

The academic year is broken up into two semesters. Each semester is approximately 90 instructional days long. You can find the academic calendar here.

4. What is the curriculum at APU?

Our school curriculum is based on the California State Standards. The processes and content are reviewed and adapted, where necessary, to be more responsive to the broader needs of our students.

5. Do I have to buy textbooks and stationary supplies for my child?

Students in the Middle and High School program are required to purchase textbooks once their class schedules have been finalized. Students can purchase their books from the APU Book Store.

6. What After School Activities do you have?

A diverse range of extracurricular activities is available for our students to participate in, both during and after school hours. These include team sports, musical activities, community service projects and games.

7. Who prepares the food of the canteen?

Food in the canteen is provided by an experienced and professional cooking team.

8. Which routes are covered by your school buses?

We have a fleet of buses that pick up students from the surrounding districts. Our bus system picks up students in the morning and drops them off after school in districts as far as District 7, 2 and Go Vap. 9. What is there to do if you live in the dorm?

There is an abundance of activities available for students including after-school clubs, sports, and music, art and drama opportunities. The computer labs are also open after school and on Saturday mornings and afternoons for internet access. Students also have wifi access in their dorm room.

The APU Student Care Team and dormitory parents actively plan a wide range of activities for boarding students.

10. Where are the meals served for dorm students?

Breakfast and lunch are served in the canteen. Dinners are served in the dormitory in the dining room.

11. How many students share a room in the dormitories?

Each bedroom houses either one to two students, with older students usually taking the single rooms. The rooms are spacious and is furnished with queen sized beds, desks, dressers, wardrobes and end tables.

12. What are the dorm rules like?

All of the specific dorm guidelines are outlined in the residence life handbook which is given to each dorm student and parent. We are committed to developing and maintaining healthy guidelines and boundaries for our students and our boarding community. Our guidelines are designed to balance the needs of each individual with the needs of the community. We try to give our students as much freedom as possible, while respecting and honoring the needs of others. We believe that the benefits of living in community far outweigh whatever personal sacrifices each individual makes out of consideration for others.
